CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
Susan (mid 20-30’s) A woman who lost her eyesight in an automobile accident 18 months earlier. Though she’s made significant progress, she’s still in the process of “learning to be blind,” and is challenged by her husband to develop the skills necessary to be self-reliant. “You can walk to my studio and back,” he instructs, “but no asking for help” to which Susan replies, “Why do I have to be the world’s champion blind woman?”
Sam (late 20-40’s) Susan’s taskmaster of a husband, Sam believes in tough love. He and Susan met in the hospital after her accident where Sam was also being treated for traumatic fallout from WWII. As Susan was instrumental with his recovery, he’s now returning the favor in his own mansplaining way. However, Sam has his own blind-spots, especially to the imminent danger looming outside their door.
Mike (mid 30’s and older) Mike is one of 3 men intent on recovering an item they believe has come into Sam’s possession…namely, a child’s doll holding smuggled valuables. But the three cons have distinct personalities and experience with crime. Mike’s particular strength is his ability to pass himself off as the “nice guy…” which proves to be his tragic flaw.
Carlino (middle-age) Our playwright describes him as “a bearish man in a heavy overcoat.” The mostly-silent bully of the trio, he helps himself to food in Susan’s fridge, and slips a $20 bill in his pocket. A former policeman, Carlino is physically imposing, and just bright enough to employ a little muscle when confronted. But his bravado and brawn far outweigh his brain power, and Roat is well aware of this shortcoming.
Roat (middle-age) The most experienced criminal, and the brains of the group, Roat is cold and ruthless in his determination to get what he needs…at any cost…even from this suddenly gutsy blind woman.
Gloria (12 - 14) Susan’s annoyingly bratty upstairs neighbor. She also happens to be fearless, feisty, and eager for adventure as she goes from being nosy pest to Susan’s greatest ally.
Please know this production calls for instances of stage combat, all of which will be blocked and rehearsed under the guidance of a professional fight choreographer.
